seminar

according to the now almost classical thesis of edward said, orientalism is a conceptual scheme that mediates the domination of the west upon the orient. in the framework of post-colonial studies major attempts are being made to represent the geographic area described as orient without the mediation of that conceptual scheme, and to empower cultural and political agencies from within it to acquire active positions in constant process of negotiation of what the orient is. maria todorovas definition of “balkanism” as a specific type of orientalism, related to a phantasmatic image of the balkans as “orient in europe”, opens up even a more complex field for dealing with this discourse. In account of that rastko monik makes the distinction between orientalism, where "the logic of domination is imposed by the colonial rule and balkanism where the immanent logic of self-constitution itself generates the incapacity to conceive of oneself in other terms than from the point of view of the dominating other". the process of emancipation from the balkanist discourse therefore doesn’t rely on struggles against direct domination by the other, but on the one against perceiving the local cultural history solely as the outcome of the already set matrix developed in the more advanced european countries whose paths need to be followed and repeated with addition of some local flavors. critical art practices form the region provide us with edifying models that escape the dialectics of mutually supportive and geo-politically defined cultural stereotypes.

the title "curating the balkans" refers to the rising interest in curating exhibitions of contemporary art dealing with the balkan region and some of its socio-political features. recently realized exhibitions, like "in search of balkania, blood and honey or in the gorges of the balkans" are putting in focus of the global art world the relation between the critical art practices in the region and the cultural stereotypes related to the balkans. the motive of the seminar is to critically review the strategies that the curators of these exhibitions are using on conceptual as well as on practical level. the participating curators from the region will position themselves regarding the issues of "curating the balkans" as the theme, as well as "curating from the balkans", the region of their origin, and will be asked to articulate their standpoints on these issues through a concrete joint art project.

the seminar is intended to initiate the process of building the basic infrastructure for institutional cooperation and exchange in the region in respect of curatorial work and art criticism, as well as for individual researches for young professionals in those fields. through the analyses of the institutional infrastructures in the countries of the region and presentations of locally initiated projects dealing with the specific position of the curators and critics working in the region, the seminar will map the existing capacities and provide with an agenda for a joint platform that would facilitate further cooperation between partners in the region as well as strengthen all the local initiatives. the seminar is to be the first in a row, this time concentrating on central balkan countries, and is to be followed by the next meeting at the thessaloniki forum in december 2004.
